I didn't really do anything special my last night.  But the last few weeks I was doing a lot of lasts.  I made sure I had all the local food I would miss one last time, tried to see relatives, make good bye phone calls, etc.  I just spread things out over time so I didn't feel rushed to pack it all in at the last minute.  Not too much I wish I had done differently other than going with a different moving company and buy more mac n cheese.  Oh, yeah I wish I had been able to see my grandfather's grave one last time.  I really wanted to do that.

Oh...
//settles in with warm memories and a smile...

My last night in Charlotte was spent with my best friend. We went out, acting as though we were still in college, to all of the places that we used to go/wanted to go, being as silly as silly could be. ('Meh -- I'm never going to see these people again!' hehe)

The next day, I drove up to NY to spend a week with family before StarDog and I flew over. My last night in NY was an absolutely perfect dinner with 'em all. My mom made fab food, Daddy made strong drinks, and bro and SIL made a fab cake that said 'London or bust!' hehe...

Just remember it's never really a forever goodbye. (But heck, I was just so flippin' excited to start a life over here, I think I could've been locked in a closet with bamboo shoots up my fingernails and I still would've been happy!)

Can't wait to see you when you get here!

 :-* Me, too!

And thanks for all the lovely responses! I think I've decided to do the midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show at a local old cinema. I've still got SO much to do between now and Saturday (like selling my car this morning!!), but I can always sleep on the plane, right? ;)

I barely slept the night before I left. I had a late morning/early afternoon flight out of Boston to Newark (for a 5 hour layover). I then took a redeye from Newark to Birmingham. By that time I was seriously dragging. Luckily, the flight was mostly empty so I got an entire row to myself, but I still barely slept. My first day in Shropshire I was a zombie.[smiley=freak.gif]

Welcome to the UK!!  :)

My wife (girlfriend back then) and I had been living together in NYC before we came over to the UK, and we spent our last three nights in the city eating at our favorite restaurants in our neighborhood.  As we were walking into the last one (a little French place) we were laughing about something, and the host exclaimed, "You look so happy, I am going to buy you a bottle of wine!"

When he came over to the table with our free bottle of wine (yay!), he asked what we were celebrating.  I explained that this was our last night in NY, and we'd saved this restaurant for our final meal.  For a moment I thought he might cry, and then he composed himself and told us he was comping our dessert, too.   :)

The next day we set off on our North American Farewell Tour, taking in Washington, DC, Memphis, Fayetteville (AR), and finally Austin, Texas, where I dumped most of my worldly possessions at my parents' house before flying over to the UK.  I don't remember doing anything particularly special on the very last night, but it was an eventful week.

I honestly can't remember but just wanted to let you know you can do Rocky Horror in Leicester Square whenever the spirit moves you.  ;D

The next day we set off on our North American Farewell Tour...

Hey I did one of those too!  ;D  DH flew over to meet me in Tampa (where I was living), and we then flew to Baltimore (one brother & his wife), toured Washington DC, then to 'middle of nowhere' Kansas (mom & grandma), then rented a car & drove down to DFW (other brother), then on for a little sightseeing to San Antonio, then back to DFW, then flew back to Tampa for a few days before leaving for Manchester.  It was when I introduced DH to all of my family, before I took off.

We didn't know what time zone we were in or what day it was by the time we got over here.

My favorite part of the Farewell Tour was picking up the gigantic white Dodge Durango we would be driving from the Budget Rent A Car on 52nd Street in Manhattan, where the following exchange took place.

Emma (seeing gigantic white Dodge Durango for the first time): "Oh my God.  I'm going to wreck that."
Me: "Maybe we better not talk about wrecking the rental car while we're standing at the rental car counter."
Budget Employee (Bronx accent): "Y'all got the insurance.  You can wreck it if you want."

I miss New York sometimes.  :)

Greatests Hits from the North American Farewell Tour - geez, you drove all of that, didn't you?  We cheated a bit & flew around.  :P

My favourite moment was when the Sat-Nav in the rental car wanted us to drive down the George Bush Turnpike in DFW...and we both all - whoa, we don't want to go that way!

And DH liked the San Antonio Mission Trail & discovering there are a few really old things in the US that we haven't torn down & built a theme park upon.  ;) :D

Hell, yeah, we drove the whole thing.  I would've done it in two or three days, but Emma insisted she wanted to see some of America (crazy foreigner), and began looking up all the state tourist websites and planning day trips to see the world's biggest ball of twine and other various attractions, affording her an opportunity to learn the difference in scale between US and UK maps:

Emma: Between Washington and Memphis, could we just pop down to Charleston, South Carolina?
Me: No.  It's 10 hours from DC to Charleston; I've driven it before.
Emma: No way!  It's really close on this map!
Me: Ask Mapquest.
Emma: [checks the internet] 9 hours, 58 minutes.
Me: Told ya.
