Moving to London with a toddler and a baby--are we crazy?
« on: October 11, 2004, 09:33:36 PM »
My husband and I are two of those odd people who want to move just for the sake of living elsewhere for a while. I've lived abroad for most of my life, and have been feeling restless living here in DC for the past 8 years, and my husband fell in love with London the first time he visited, and he's been back 3 times since then and has loved it more each time. We just got our HSMP application approved, and we are seriously thinking of doing this thing...but I have a daughter who just turned 2, and an 11-month-old son. I am so nervous about making the wrong decision.  We still have to get our entry clearance (has anyone else done that?) and then we have to sell our house to finance this move. Agh!!!!  I go from being terribly excited at the adventure to having panic attacks at what it will entail. I'd love to hear from anyone else who lives in London or the UK with young children.  Or anyone else who has just packed up and moved abroad, without a British fiance or expat package or any kind of safety net.
I hope I'll get to know all of you in the upcoming months...we've only got 5 months to get everything together and get our little Yank selves over there!

Welcome!!!

Crazy for moving? or crazy for having a toddler and a baby? [smiley=inquisitive.gif] mmmmm?

The culture shock isn't instantaneous -- but it will smack you between the eyes!  I love love LOVE London!  It's the commute TO London I hate! (I live in the ars* end of NOWHERE)

I'm sure you'll be able to find a group of Moms with kids and find play groups for the chillins.  Best of luck with your move -- I remember how stressful moving can be!  Take care!  [smiley=joker.gif]

I have just packed up and moved. . .  not to the UK but to elsewhere.  Also sans kids but you know what?  I do not regret it and while you do have to thin kof the children I also can tell you that growing up global is not such a bad thing.  For the first 18 years of my life I spent a total of 3.5 in the USA and I came out okay (though some might argue differently ;D )

Plus your kids are young.  Well I did not mean to go on and on... just wanted to say welcome to UKY!

Thanks all for the wise words.  :) I just got a call completely out of the blue from a UK recruiter today...so I am taking it as a sign that it is meant to be! Now, I just have to sell my house, pack up my stuff, buy plane tickets, find housing, open a bank account, find daycare...and start our new lives!  ;D
