Good idea/not too hard to move back to US now?
« on: December 10, 2012, 09:01:59 PM »
Hi  :)

This had probably been asked repeatedly.  I moved to the UK in 2009 to be with my UK husband and just need to do the ceremony this year to become a UK citizen. I'm thinking of moving back to the USA next year as my job prospects are better and more lucrative there (RN US, not UK). My husband works in IT. I know that once we leave the UK, I'll just be returning for visits. Is it good to move back to the US now?  :-\\\\

What do you mean by 'is it good' to move back? Do you mean is the employment situation good? Or something else?

There are too many variables for anyone to be able to make a judgement for you.

As for the green card, you can DCF through the Embassy in London which makes things easier.

We've recently moved back, during the summer. After three years of not finding a job in the UK, I had a job to come back to, plus an offer of another, before leaving the UK. Of course, that all depends on the area you are moving to and your field, as mentioned above with the variables.

We went the DCF route for hubby's green card, and it was much easier than his first green card. Plus, you can file and be taking the steps to complete it time to come back at the same time.

Thank you for the advice  :) Still trying to weigh out the pros and cons of whether and when to move or not. Like many posters on other threads in the same topic, I'm dissatisfied with the work I've been able to get in the UK so far. Kept trying to be patient for the past 3 years, but it's hard. My husband has type 2 diabetes (borderline) and it's good that NHS covers his meds and GP appointments, things that in the US we'll have to co-pay for even with insurance  :-\\\\

I think you will find that the answer to your question is different for each person.  We have lived here for 7 1/2 years and had the chance to move back a few months ago. MrRed5 would have been able to transfer with his current employer and the relo package was quite nice.  We would have filed DCF using I-864W (MrRed5 lived in the States for 13 years).
However, the area of the States that we would relocate to has a very high cost of living.  There were other personal factors as well and in the end we decided to stay here until a transfer opportunity arises in an area of the States where the cost of living isn't so high.
I wish you all the best in your decision making.

Thanks, that's very informative  :) Such as in your case, in 2010 my husband had an opportunity to do an intra-company transfer to Columbus, OH but later decided that he didn't really want to stay with that company. It turned out to be a good decision, it just wasn't the right time and company to move back with.
