UK citizenship
« on: December 13, 2012, 03:35:30 AM »
Hi all!
I am wanting to know from start to finish of how a US citizen married to a UK citizen "level up" ;D (for a lack of better words) to UK passport? lets say from the start of both living in the US wanting to move back to the UK. Do you get a UK passport or just a residency card at the end of the process?
Just a newbie trying to understand the full process. :)
Thanks guys!

You can if you want to, but as things stand right now you don't have to.

If you're already married, the process would be:
-apply for a Spouse Visa (good for 2.5 years) from the US
-just before those 2.5 years are up, apply for further leave to remain (also valid for 2.5 years) from within the UK
-just before those 2.5 years are up, apply for indefinite leave to remain (valid indefinitely)
-once you have been living in the UK for three years (including the time since your Spouse Visa) and hold indefinite leave to remain, you can apply for UK citizenship and a passport

Of course it's not quite as simple as that (the Spouse Visa has strict financial requirements now), but that's the basic timeline.  5 years from Spouse Visa to Citizenship.  :)
July 2012 - Fiancée Visa | Nov 2012 - Married
Dec 2012 - FLR | Nov 2014 - ILR | Dec 2015 - UK Citizen
