Idiot Ex-husband
« on: January 02, 2013, 11:20:46 AM »
Grrrrrr! So my idiot of an ex-husband shipped my daughter's Christmas gifts Fedex. He paid an unbelievable amount of money as he left it till last minute (the 21st) and wanted them to arrive before Christmas (they did on the 23rd). I was impressed that he even sent her anything as he completely forgot to send something for her birthday in November. Anyway...this morning I get a letter from Fedex in my 14 year olds name (kind of completely mispelled her last name) and its actually an invoice for 64.57 for customs and duty tax and some fee of 10.00. Firstly....he never marked it anywhere that it was a gift. Secondly, he completely over valued the gift. He sent her a Cool Pix L25 camera that is around $100.00 or less...he valued it at 200.00 (he likes to make himself look good so the more expensive the gift the better dad he is??) a camera bag that was 50.00 (not a chance) and headphones that were worth 40.00....again...no way.
I'm so annoyed and I have an email into fedex...and a message to the ex. There is NO way I'm paing 64.00 because he over valued everything. NOT what I needed today!

What an idiot. However, I'm not sure FedEx will do anything about it - they were merely following the instructions he spelled out on the customs form. I really hope you can get the ex to cough up the money! You shouldn't have to pay!

Oh I know it will be paid...but hopefully it will be by the ex. He has to make everything so complicated! Definitely didn't budget this in for the month  ::)

People often think the valuation is for insurance purposes - not customs - so they bump it up. Either that or they want to make it look like they bought a more expensive gift. But yeah -- an idiot.

Yep, my parents do that--they round "up" because the FedEx guy (or whatever) convinces them to also buy insurance.  I have asked them to just write "gift" and not increase the amount but so far no luck. (I have also asked for just a lovely card, or some silly socks, but my mother is quite hung up on sending an "appropriate" present.)

It is very frustrating!
