Hotel near US embassy??
« on: November 19, 2012, 08:12:37 AM »
Can anyone recommend a reasonable/ nice hotel near the US embassy in London??  Need to go down to renew DD passport and the appointments all seem to be in the morning.

Thanks

What would you consider reasonable? Because of its location, hotels within walking distance can be pretty pricey. What's your ideal nightly rate, excluding VAT?

I've stayed at and recommend The Mandeville Hotel (http://www.mandeville.co.uk) which is about a 10 minute walk away. It's usually pretty reasonable, but this time of year hits the £200/night exl VAT mark.

Check out AirBnB.com

I have used that site for a number of locations all over the world, and it has always been a good experience. I have been using it for many years now.

Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

Does it have to be within walking distance? DS just stayed at the Penn Club (Bedford Place, Bloomsbury area) for his Embassy business. They charge 65 pounds for a "budget" room B&B and its probably about 20 minutes on the Central Line to Grosvenor Sq.
ETA: you don't have to be a Quaker or a Club member to stay there.

Thanks for the replies-

No it doesn't have to be in walking distance although it would be nice.  I am hoping to avoid the tube etc just because it'll be rush hour when we have to get to our appointment.  We'll be coming into Euston the night before and all the appointments seem to be 10:30 or earlier.  Will be traveling with a 4 yo.

Hoping to spend around 100GBP if possible.

Thanks Lara- checked out the website and it looks ideal.  Do they typically do 1 night stays??

Well, it is owner run, so it depends on the owner. But, for the most part, I have found the people who list on there to be really, really nice, and very flexible.

I used it in Egypt, Israel, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Luxembourg, London, New York City, Miami Beach, L.A., Paris, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Colombia, and Spain - And everyone I met was very cool, and I never had any problems.

Write to them, tell them why you need the room, and I hope (and even suspect) they will be very understanding.

Hoping to spend around 100GBP if possible.

For central London that would be amazing! I would take a look around Bayswater. It's really easy to get to Bond St on the circle line, even in rush hour. There are tons of cheap and cheerful places around there. Like http://www.lancastergatehotelhydepark.co.uk/default-en.html - I stayed there a few years ago when it was a Park Inn, and it was £95/night. I can't vouch for it these days, but it did exactly what it said on the tin.

Also, take a look at sawdays.co.uk. There are a few BnB's listed that might fit the bill.

There are two resorts on the rectangle, The century on the southern part, and the Marriott on the northern. There are another two within several metres, The Connaught, in Carlos place, and the Grosvenor home.

Doesn't really get much closer than this

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g186338-d193155-Reviews-Millennium_Hotel_London_Mayfair-London_England.html

Stayed there back in 2001 not long after 9/11, (remember seeing all the additional security and concrete blocks outside) got a really good deal on Lastminute.com
