What is the best engagement or pre-wedding gift you received?
« on: January 19, 2013, 10:24:38 AM »
My baby sister got engaged last night! :D  I am so excited for her. I want to find something really special to give to her and her fiance.

I did look on notonthehighstreet.com and ordered a personalized card. I might get one of their prints, but still would like some ideas. She's in the States, so shipping is a consideration if I can't get it from a US store.

Thanks!

Well, she was an American girl, raised on promises.
She couldn't help thinking that there was a little more to life, somewhere else.
After all it was a great big world, with lots of places to run to.
And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.

We didn't really get gifts, only cards. I don't really think it's necessary to give gifts, but I think a wedding planner binder or any type of wedding book would be nice. Obviously you would want to order a US version of one. You could order it from US Amazon and have it shipped to her. Another idea is maybe a personalized candy/chocolate set. When my fiance's brother got engaged, he and his fiance got a personalized candy and chocolate box from their friends, which was a cute idea.

I sent my best friend this book when they got engaged. (I've also read this one, which was good.)

We didn't get any gifts, just a couple of cards, so I don't know that it's really mandatory.

Engagement gifts?!   :o

Nothing wrong with a sister-to-sister 'I'm happy for you' present, but... I don't know anyone who has ever received or given an 'engagement gift'.

I agree with Tracey.  I think it's really nice for you to get your sister something, but don't think engagement gifts on the whole are a regular thing.  Don't forget there's wedding shower gifts as well, at least in the US, so between the shower and the wedding itself that's a lot of gifts!  :)

I've never received or given engagement or pre-wedding gifts either. But as it's your sister and you want to give her a little something, I think a wedding planner is a great idea.

Thanks for all your ideas!

I agree that engagement gifts are not the norm, nor should they be. However, I have heard of close family members giving engagement gifts. Regardless, she is my baby sister (16 years my junior), so I just wanted to do something special for her.

Thank you again! I got some good ideas. :)

For my brother-in-law we got them two crystal champagne flutes to use for the toast at their wedding (and anniversaries after).  As it's your sister, I would give a gift.   :)
