Do I owe taxes in the UK?
« on: January 20, 2013, 12:40:21 AM »
The UK tax deadline is 31 Jan.

I lived in the UK since 30 April 2012. I lived in the USA previous to that.

My employer already paid PAYE tax, NI Contributions, and so on...and that was taken out of my paycheck.

I only earned two paychecks worth around £8,200 (net pay after tax) in the UK before I got laid off. However, it came on a higher salary of £65,000 base.

I have an NI Number as well.

Do I still need to file taxes in the UK by the 31 Jan deadline? Will I owe any tax based on my minimal actual earnings?

Thank you!

Why do you think you need to file a UK tax return?

Perhaps the OP isn't familiar with the UK tax system and presumes that it is like the USA, where there is a requirement to file a tax return if one's income is over a certain amount?

If the OP had any foreign income or gains he might have to pay UK tax on that if he is taxed on an arising basis, but there should be no need to file for his UK income if he's in PAYE. But he should check with HMRC to see if they have his tax code correct and whether he is due a refund as he only earned 8200 GBP.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the filing deadline of 31 Jan 2013 is for the tax year that ended 5 apr 2012. If OP moved to the UK 30 Apr 2012 he wouldn't have any UK tax liability this year.
