What forms for US taxes?
« on: January 29, 2013, 05:32:27 PM »
I have read through this forum on taxes and a bunch of linked sites, but I'm still a bit confused.

I tried to file taxes last year, but found I couldn't e-file, got frustrated and gave up.

I really want to get things up straight this year, I thought I needed to use the 1040 form.  I am from MN and checked their site and I shouldn't have to file state taxes because I am a resident in the UK (from what I've read on the MN state tax site).  I make roughly £15K annually here, I don't have any savings in the US, don't have income from any other sources, I do have student loans in the states that I have been paying off.  Can anyone tell me what forms I need to file for the past tax year and the current one?

Thank you!

The IRS provide some GREAT information for free here:

Does this answer your question?

I think I have a better handle on it now, but 2 questions:

Do I need to file for an ITIN for my husband?  I thought I was just able to put NRA in the space for his ssn?

Also, this is probably a stupid question, but for last year's taxes, I would need forms with 2011 on them?

Thank you!

You only need an ITIN for your husband if you're filing jointly. If you do married filing separately you can just put NRA. For last year the forms will say 2012. Forms with 2011 on them would be for 2011. ;)
