It's a nice piece -  I think so anyways...

My parents always say to me "I don't think you'd be happy here and Scotland just suits you. I miss you, but you're having so much fun, and that makes me happy"

And of course I miss them endlessly as well.....

I liked it, but she clearly hasnt got any Grandchildren yet! My parents are the same, they know how happy I am here, and even though they miss the kids, we are really lucky to spend quite a lot of time together, so it works out. Thanks for sharing.

I'm pretty sure mine will consider this to be the perfect set up. They get to be all martyrs because we don't live there, but they won't actually have to do anything.

Good article but from personal experience not all parents have the ability to think that way.

I wish my dad would be that way...

We've finally broken the news to him (I see now why I waited so long to tell him, good reason!) and he took less than 3 days to begin his usual gossip about the whole thing and less than 3 days to inform us of how so and so thinks it's a big mistake. I knew, somewhere inside, he would do this... I had hoped for better but knew this would happen.

Being concerned for your child is perfectly normal but doing your best in conniving ways to make them change their minds only pushes them further away from you.

Sorry for the mini-vent- this post just came at a sore time for me.  :( I'm so sick of family who just can't be happy for us.
9/11/2012 Husband mailed his US citizenship application.
9/17/2012 Received e-mail stating his application has been entered into the system.
9/22/2012 Hubby received letter with date for finger printing.
10/12/12 Hubby went for finger printing.
10/26/12 Dh got a letter stating when he should appear for his interview and test- 11/27/12- just a month away!!!
11/27/12 We went to dh's interview and test- he passed and we went back 4 hours later for the Oath Ceremony! 95 people from 38 countries, really pretty cool!
So he's now a US citizen!!

I've been in the UK for about 2 1/2 years now and my mom still mentions that I/we should move back to the states every time we speak.  My dad is more understanding, he knows we're happy here and he just wants me to be happy.  We've started saving for a mortgage and I don't plan on ever mentioning that to my mom.  I understand where she's coming from because our entire extended family, minus two cousins, live within an hour of each other in Minnesota.

I don't know what it's going to be like when we decide to have kids, a lot worse I imagine.

That's why I said share the article with them  ;)

No, I do realise its more complicated than that and I know some parents are masters of guilt trips (my BF's Mum has this down to an art form) -
But at the end of the day, we're all our own people with our own lives to lead.

I know but I should have been more specific in my reply, for my situation sharing it with him would probably be a good idea- so thank you for that, but he's just so darn stubborn and judgmental. :(

I need to tattoo this to my forehead or something, it's so true and something I keep forgetting when I fall into the guilt.

That's got to be so rough. Is there any way you could inform her that it's not going to happen so please stop mentioning it? In a kind way. Personally I get so tired of people who feel a need to intervene in other people's lives when it is entirely unwarranted.

I've been here for 14 years and my mom still slips that into every conversation...and we speak twice a day or so! Ha!

Haha.. I cannot remember a time ever when I visited home and my mother didn't at least slyly point out which homes in the neighbourhood were for sale.

I'll enjoy posting this article to my blog.  I think it'd be good for my parents to read it.
