More Spouse visa help needed, please!
« on: January 25, 2013, 05:50:31 AM »
I've written this 3 times and timed-out. So, if I seem short, I'm sorry. :)

Is 16,000 GBS all that's required in savings for the spousal visa, or is it the floor? I get confused reading the literature, and am really hoping that DH doesn't need 5 times his yearly wage!

Also, can we combine our savings? Most of my savings is tied into my 401k. Can I provide evidence of this savings and submit that with the application for the spousal visa? Granted, it's retirement funds, but it is my money. Once I quit my job to move to the UK, I can get access to it (with heavy tax penalties).

I realize that my USA full-time employment wages count toward nothing.

BUT...what about internet businesses, like Etsy? I have my own Etsy shop, which could be easily operated from the USA or the UK. It hasn't been tremendously profitable, but I haven't had the time to dedicate my full energy to it, either. Living in the USA, I've needed a full-time job for insurance reasons. In the UK, that would no longer be the case.

I also used to have a YouTube channel, which I earned money off creating "how-to" tutorials on crocheting, decoupaging, and jewelry making.

Can anything like these businesses, which operate globally....count toward income for the visa application? I won't qualify for the entrepreneurial visa. I'm not THAT successful. But we're just talking about an extra 5,000 GBS per year (on top of DH salary)....DH and I are just desperate.

I sincerely appreciate anyone who cared enough to take the time to read this and respond. :)

For the finances, if the UK citizen (your husband?) earns £18,600 or more before tax, then you don't need savings.

If he earns less than £18,600, then you need £16,000 PLUS 2.5 times the difference between his salary and £18,600 (the first £16,000 doesn't count).

So, if he earns £15,000, you need £25,000 in savings; if he earns £10,000, you need £37,500 and if he has no income, you need £62,500 in savings.

Your 401k savings will not count towards any requirement as they are not cash savings.
