Yes, I know it isn't an excuse. I moved to the UK in May 2009 and started working here in January 2010. So basically I need to file for 2010, 2011 and 2012. I only earn £14k a year and don't have any investments or other income so my taxes shouldn't be very complicated to do. I know I need to fill in the 1040 and 2555-EZ forms. Is there anything else I need to include? A letter explaining why I'm late, or would that make things worse since they don't consider ignorance a valid excuse?

I'm finally flying back to the US for a visit in a couple months and I keep having these silly visions of being dragged away by an IRS agent upon landing!

There's no fine for late filing other than interest on taxes owed. So if you owe no tax there'll be nothing for you to pay.

But there are penalties in the law for late filing of several information returns such as FBARs.
