How do you find apartments in the UK?!
« on: March 12, 2013, 05:57:08 PM »
I live in Southampton and there aren't many apartment communities around where I'm at. When I lived in America, I used to be able to go online and type in something like, "apartments Salt Lake City" and a multitude of websites for different apartment properties would come up. I do that here, and nothing is found.

Are there not apartment complexes in the UK?

Try searching for "flats" not "apartments" ;).

I usually do search for flats, I never find any complexes. I just find rooms in houses and such.

They don't exist. Or at least, are rare.

Not in the way you are used to, no. There are not many buildings that have proper leasing offices like we're used to, just walking in and being shown around any open or show flats. In fact, I'd say most larger buildings that we could equate to looking like an "apartment complex" will most likely be owner occupied and rented out direct by a private landlord or via estate agent. This is not always the rule, as I know of a place in Sheffield that I saw online recently that is renting out units via their sales office.

Best way is to use a property search portal like already mentioned. These are sites where estate agents will submit their rentals, kind of a catch all. Keep in mind that these sites are often woefully out of date because of how quickly properties are snatched up, but at least it can direct you to an estate agent that may have similar properties. Right Move is my fave (great phone app too), but you can also use:

primelocation.co.uk
findaproperty.co.uk
vebra.com

To get more private landlords, (there's a filter to chose between private and agency) check out the following:

Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…
