Hello from North Carolina
« on: November 20, 2012, 02:16:58 AM »
Hi everyone,

I've been browsing the board as a guest for a few days, and thought I would go ahead and register myself, and say hi.

What brought me to your site... my wife is a UK citizen and has been living here with me for the past 5 years, and her home sickness is kicking into overdrive and she's been talking about wanting us to move (back) to the UK. When we got engaged almost 6 years ago, I told her if she ever wanted to move back, that I would support that and jump into it with both feet. She appears to be cashing in that promise now haha.

We also have two little girls, ages 3 and 1. So the circumstances are different now, but I think they're young enough for us to still proceed with the move. Had our 3yr old been any older and in school, I'd probably not be in favor for it.

At any rate, here we are, getting the wheels in motion of pulling it all together. In terms of me and our kids immigrating, that's probably the easy part. My father is a UK citizen, which lets me obtain my UK citizenship (I was born before '83) straight forward with no visas to deal with. And our kids can obviously get their UK citizenship through my wife.

Location wise, we're looking in Kent where the majority of my wife's family live. More specifically, Canterbury or Herne Bay. We were in Herne Bay for 2 weeks last month on vacation and I quite enjoyed the area. It was great being a 10 minute walk from the seaside and High Street, and generally being more relaxed compared to the hustle and bustle of areas closer to London.

Thanks to all of you who contribute to this site and provide a wealth of information. It's truly been invaluable in the short few days I've been browsing. Hope to connect with more expats during our 8-12 month process of moving to the UK.

John

Welcome to the site from a fellow NC'er! I'm back in NC currently for Thanksgiving with my husband, the UKC, but we reside in Norwich.

Hi Mrs_T_M, and thanks for the welcome. I was reading your signature, and I gotta say holy crap at the speed in which you moved. That was no time at all between getting your visa and landing there! Did you not have many things to square away beforehand?

I was working as a tutor at a place that I kept informed on everything that was happening and told them that as soon as I received my visa that I would be moving. They were fine with that. In fact I stopped by there yesterday to say hello and chat for a short while with the owner! I own my home in the States, but my mother has lifetime rights, so I didn't need to worry with selling or renting the house. I had already informed my bank of the situation and they made a note on my account that I would be between both countries from then on out.

I had already applied and received our marriage licenses and documents, new drivers license and passport to reflect the name change, as well as a new social security card. My husband took a day off work to meet myself and my mother at the airport and helped us get back to Norwich.

Keeping everyone informed and making absolutely sure to have the proper paperwork is what made it so quick for me to travel.
