Early infancy questions
« on: October 18, 2004, 05:45:59 PM »
Nick is now about 10 weeks.  His elder half-brother is 13 and his elder half-sister is 23, so I've forgotten a bit.  Some questions:  how old before they can drink actual liquids other than Simulac?  Like apple juice and what not?

Other question:  both my other ones went through a phase in their infancy where they stared at their hands a lot.  They were, presumably, coming to grips with the idea that they had hands.  I thought this was about 2 weeks, but clearly, that's wrong.  Anybody know?  After the hands thing, they start looking at their feet.

TIA!

Philip didn't start getting interested in his hands until he was a few months old. I'm thinking around 4 or 5, actually. He onyl started getting interested in his feet at about 6 months old - but he still won't put them in his mouth or anything.

As far as the liquids go - he had water at around 6 weeks because of constipation, but he HATES dirnking. Anything. Always has. We've tried him on juices (we gave him super diluted baby-juice at 4 months) just because he was getting so few fluids in him we were a bit worried. He wouldn't have any of it. ((On a side note, they make juice for 4 month olds, but Philip didn't want any. I think they are fine as long as the baby is getting enough milk and the juice isn't used as a substitute)).

Now, at 6.5 months, he's enjoying playing with a sippy cup, but still gets annoyed that something comes out of it.  ::) A drinker he ain't.
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

My little one is almost 6 months old.  He drinks formula and will keep drinking it until he goes on milk around 1 year old.  My doctor says to stay away from juice until they are older than a year.  She said that because it's sweet, they'll like the taste better than their formula and not want anything else.  We've also done water when it's hot (we're in Texas) which ends up mostly on his shirt.

As for the hands, he found them in the first month, but never stared at them.  He spent another month hitting himself in the head trying to find his mouth.  He realized socks are fun to pull on around 5 months and will suck his toes on occasion.  Although he prefers the dog when he can catch her.

Yasmin is drinking formula now; she's 6 months.  I've been trying to give her water when she she eats her semi-solids but  she makes a face when she realizes what it is.  I was also advised against juice.  Although you could give a very watered down version of it.  Yasmin started staring at her hands a month or so ago and is now starting to show interest in her feet.

I'm grateful to those who replied!  I now understand that it's too early yet for me to be watching for those signs of development; so I'll lay back a bit
