Looking for alternatives to Ealing Broadway
« on: March 16, 2013, 05:53:00 PM »
The wife and I like the Ealing Broadway area because it feels very safe but has loads of shops, restaurants, and bars all conveniently located. I will be the only one commuting into work to either Green Park, Piccadilly Circus, Oxford Circus or Bond Street stations. I am positioned in the middle of all of them, closet being Green park and Piccaddily. So preference is to live on either the Central line, Piccadilly Line, or Jubilee line.

We are new to London so we don't really have time to venture out to each areas, so hoping you can all help to throw in your recommendations. I would love a direct commute (no train change if possible). We are trying to budget around 1400-1500 a month for a 2 bedroom. We like the buzz of Ealing broadway, so looking for some alternative areas that are similar to cast a wider net. We would want to live within zones 1-3.

Thanks in advance! Really appreciate it!

Imho you should get this out of your head if only for the simple reason that the easier it is by public transport, the more expensive it is. You might miss out on a fantastic area of town just because it isn't a direct route to work.

Here's a few areas to give you a start, though not sure of the likelihood of finding what you are after in your budget. I really, highly recommend just getting out and exploring.

Shepherd's Bush -  W London - Central Line
Crouch End - N London - a bus ride to a nearby tube (Northern or Victoria, likely)
Queen's Park - NW London - Bakerloo Line
Balham - S London - Northern Line (or rail to Central line)
Muswell Hill - N London - rail from Alexandra Palace to Victoria line

I live in Hanwell, which is 15 minutes by bus from Ealing Broadway. We're close to the Central and District line, and we're also close to Boston Manor (zone 4) station on the Piccadilly line, Brentford Station (zone 4)- which goes to Waterloo and Vauxhall, and Hanwell station, which goes to Paddington. We're starting to get a bunch of lovely local shops, and the local library is being renovated as well. There's also a fantastic park and canal. It's in zone 4, but you can easily get a zone 1-3 travelcard and just take the bus to Ealing.
It is difficult to speak adequately, or justly, of London. It is not a pleasant place; it is not agreeable, or easy, or exempt from reproach. It is only magnificent... the biggest aggregation of human life, the most complete compendium in the world.
