Where to send US tax return from UK?
« on: March 09, 2013, 08:23:22 PM »
I have been planning to take my completed tax return with me next week when I go to California for a visit.  I thought I would mail it while I am there but just realized I don't know where to send it to.  Is there specific address to use for non residents?  Or can I simply send it to the San Francisco office like I did when I lived there?

Use this address in Austin TX -

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service Center
Austin, TX 73301-0215
USA

If you look at the 1040 instructions, that address is given for filing if you are resident outside the USA
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Hi Vadio;

If it's the IRS, it couldn't possibly be that simple  ;) .

If you are not enclosing a cheque or money order, then the Austin address is correct.
Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service Center
Austin, TX 73301-0215
USA

If you are unlucky enough to be enclosing a cheque or money order, then it appears you send the return to:
Internal Revenue Service Center
P.O. Box 1303
Charlotte, NC 28201-1303
USA

Page 6, bottom of column 1.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040.pdf
Page 108(?), (last page).

As you know, the word 'simple' is not in the IRS dictionary.

Just to add:

In the past, if you were using a private delivery service (FedEX, DHL, etc.), the address for the Austin Center was different.

Internal Revenue Submission Processing Center
3651 South Interregional Highway 35
Austin TX 78741
USA
Attention: Receipt and Processing
Telephone: (512) 460 7944

The 2012 information for 1040 still instructs you to search on the IRS site for the address. This year, I can find no reference in Publication 54 to 'private delivery services'.
Per 1040i, to view the instructions, you need to go to the IRS site and type 'private delivery service' into the search box. For some reason, you can not bookmark the page with the addresses. (It doesn't have an updated URL.)

I am assuming the above address is still correct (something to check out before June 15). Any more precise knowledge welcome!

But I wasn't correcting, I was just expanding. OK, so I'm a pedantic old git!  ;D

@ OAP - we need pedantic folks on occasion!  ;D, particularly this occasion!

I was just today given the same address for the private delivery/express delivery service, so that's right! But the phone I was given is 1-800-829-1040
