Safe Deposit Box

Does anyone know if there are safe deposit boxes available in the UK?

My husband and I are finally going on our honeymoon next month and I have two rings that are very valuable.  They are insured under our home owners insurance but only if they are being worn or in a safe.  We are travelling to Africa and I am not going to take my rings (just asking for trouble).

If we need to buy a safe we will, but I was thinking a safe deposit box would be an easy option.

Irrespective of this though, I would definitely recommend getting a good safe. You can't beat having one for the peace of mind that it provides. It's much more convenient too.

Years ago we inquired of our local Barclay's branch. The best they could offer was temporary space in their safe for a "parcel".  We had to wrap up our goodies and put them in an old cardboard box which we sealed with tape and string!  Maybe there's a better solution nowadays

I did this at my old HSBC branch, but I used a small lock box and put it in their safe.

I know there's a place in the city centre in Manchester that advertises safe deposit boxes. But I don't think it's connected to an actual bank?

Barclays is pulling out of this service. Metro Bank offers them I am told.

Storage places often offer this, big yellow self store offers a locker for instances which has CCTV, plus alarm etc, and it's about £10 a week.

I'd feel safer that they be in a locked box with a guard and 24hour CCTV than in a bank safe that a range of employees could access
People put everything they own into storage all the time]

Not terribly accessible, is it?! Plus, the bank will do it for free. I'm not sure which is safer, but I'd trust the bank more tbh.

There's plenty of safety deposit type places all over the UK. Shop around and see which does suit you.

**WARNING**

Look carefully at what you'll be trying to keep safe and potentially storing in such places. Although slightly skewed, and being of Indian origins, last summer a family member unfortunately was mugged just after leaving such a place in NW London. Upon trying to hold onto the bag, one of the attackers pushed her and she unfortunately fell back and the result was her head split open and a hospital visit with stitches. There was a LOT of valuable, irreplaceable high value Gold and other jewellery along with high value watches - all were being taken out for a family wedding a few weeks later. The insurance company didn't pay out.

As it turns out, with police investigation, a pattern was emerging and some months later the thieves were found and charged. It also turned out they were working as part of a larger group and specifically targeting Indian ladies going into safety deposit places.

In this case the group admitted to 'profiling' in order to get the best chance of high value items, but the way they monitored such places means anyone really could be watched/observed, and these guys would wait till the victim was much further away from the place and in an area with no CCTV etc.

For the most part of course, anyone using such a place will be perfectly safe, but just a reminder to be VERY vigilant, be extra careful by only going with trusted family/friends so there's more numbers of you, and if things are particularly high value monetary or sentimental wise, to split between multiple people.

The gang in this instance are awaiting trial etc and I hope they get some strong sentences.
