Woo hoo!
« on: February 06, 2014, 12:26:00 PM »
Hiya. I only posted once to say hi and I keep on forgetting to come back! Just to say my man from the US is coming to visit for the second time and this time he's going to be here for FIVE weeks! I'm so excited! In a nutshell, I'm now divorced and we're hoping to get married once his goes through (yes, not a great thing) but this is the first time my kids will meet him... He's staying with us which will be great but I'm sure it will also raise certain difficulties. He arrives next Tuesday morning!

Oh, also, can he drive here on his US driving licence?

Hi

Sounds like you are really looking forward to his visit!

He can drive here using a US licence. The easiest way is to hire a car. If you want him to be able to drive your own car, you'll need to speak to your insurance providers/company to see how much they'll charge or indeed if they'll cover him. If not, you'll need to ring around to find some temporary insurance.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Hi! I'm so sorry. I don't think I ever got notified of your reply! We had a great time. He didn't drive my car but when he moves here, presumably he'll have to take his UK test?.... :D

Glad you had a good time :).

When he moves to the UK, he will be legally allowed to drive on his US licence for up to 12 months from the date he takes up residence. If he wishes to drive after those 12 months, he will need to have passed all the UK driving tests and have received a full UK licence.

If he hasn't got his UK licence by the time the 12 months are up, he will be treated as a learner driver and will only be able to drive with a provisional licence, L plates on the car, no motorway driving, and he must be accompanied at all times by someone over 21 who has held a UK licence for at least 3 years.

So, it's a good idea for him to get started on the UK licence, driving lessons and doing the tests as soon as he can after moving to the UK, so he has enough time to get the UK licence within the first 12 months :).
