Good cheap eats in Glasgow?
« on: April 14, 2015, 03:46:51 PM »
I'll be in Glasgow in May and would like to know if there are any good cheap eats in and around or within walking distance of the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre?

I know UK-Yers love food, so I'm hoping someone will chime in with suggestions!

Thanks in advance.  :)

Good, cheap, AND within walking distance of the SECC?  I'm sorry MLG, but I am drawing a blank!  There are a few decent Indian places in/near Argyle Street, but they're not particularly cheap and also, it depends how far you want to walk.  (I suspect that what you'd call 'walking distance' would require *me* to get a bus!)

Argyle Street and around is fine by me for distance, I think!

How you know me!  ;) Or at least what I am working back up to: I try and avoid the bus, if I can. Prefer my feet + ipod.

Are there any places that are 'must try' in central Glasgow? I like all types of food genres / styles, except meat (seafood OK). Anything in tripadvisor or similar you'd really rate or suggest to avoid?

Mother India is one of the best (if not the best) Indian restaurants in Glasgow - so I hear. :) I've not tried it personally, but my colleagues and friends rave about it all the time.

The 78 is a fantastic vegetarian/vegan restaurant and you get quite a good and tasty meal for a nice price. My husband is much more about meat, but he loved his meal there and wants to go back!

It's almost a mile away from SECC, but a doable walk provided the weather's nice. It's also close to lovely Kelvingrove Park, so you could plan a nice walk there after a dinner or lunch too if you wanted. Make sure to make a reservation if you can though - it's been quite popular now that it's getting warmer!

Good luck on your trip!

Mother India is good (but most definitely not the best, in my opinion), and it's also not cheap.  There's also Mother India's CafĂ©, which is also in that area, and does tapas-size portions, but again... not cheap!

If you do find yourself in that bit, and fancy an ice cream, Big Licks is great!

I haven't been to The 78 myself, but I have heard lots of good things about it.

Just wanted to say thank you again, everybody!

Big Licks especially got the thumbs up from all - too bad we were too full to try the insane looking doughnuts!

We went to Mother India - enjoyed by 3 of the 4. Mr MLG's was cold.  :(

Aww, shame about Mr MLG's meal, but yeah.. Mother India's is generally regarded as really good.

Since we moved to Helensburgh, i hardly ever find myself in that neck of the woods anymore, but i may need to do a research trip to Big Licks!

I'll be moving to Glasgow at the end of the month with my US wife! Looking forward to trying ALL of the curry. It's so hard to find a decent curry house in Honolulu!  :o
