BIG tax mistake, don't know what to do!
« on: December 15, 2013, 11:45:01 AM »
I have lived in the UK now for 5 years and I did not realize I still had to fill out US taxes! So for the last 5 years i have not filed ANY US taxes and I have no clue where to go or what to do, or where to start really!( Im rubbish with maths AND filling out forms lol!) What should my first step be? I have been working a full time job in the UK since 2009......What should i do?!?!? Thank you for any advice, I am based in the South West.

You still have to file.  Download the previous year's returns and submit them.  You may not owe anything but penalties for not filing.

Make sure you use Form 2555 because you probably haven't earned enough to owe any actual tax.  http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f2555ez.pdf

I'm not a CPA or anything so what I've said may be missing important information.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Check out the "US - UK Taxes" section of the board: http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?board=11.0

There are threads of people who have been in similar situations, and the regulars on the board are knowledgeable and kind.
