Schooling questions...
« on: March 26, 2013, 07:21:35 PM »
Are we going to have issues getting into schools if we move to the UK in June/July this year?

Where is the best place to start looking?  We are looking to live in Worsley (Manchester) area and there are so many schools close by.  This whole process is so new to me!

When my daughter and I moved over to join hubby in March of last year, I had to get in touch with the county council. They in turn sent me the forms I needed, and then I had to list...I think it was three schools in order of preference. We had no problems getting her into our local high school even though it is a highly sought after school. I know others have had a hard time getting their first choice though...especially for primary schools. It took us a few weeks to get things situated but no big problems came up for us.

Should I start contacting now or wait until at least my husband is over there?

I think most places won't let you start applying until you are actually living there.

Ok...so we have the house secured.  My husband has been in contact with county council and they sent us the form asking us to list schools.  Do I have to put all 4 options?  Or are 2-3 enough?

I know this is a bit of thread digging so you may have the answer.  No you don't have to fill all the options, I remember that you can fill in one, that's what happened with me when I applied to upper school. (Especially as there were only 2 options in my catchment.)

I've been doing research on school enrolment for my 8 year old since we'll be moving in August or September and on the city council website for Greenwich they said you may be placed in a school further from you or your catchment area if they don't have the room to put you in a school nearby. So unless your child is special needs, social issues or applying through the Fair Access Panel; I suggest filling out all the slots. Again this is just Greenwich, it could be different for Manchester..
