Tutoring for SATs
« on: June 11, 2013, 03:23:14 PM »
Hi I live in Southampton, Hampshire and looking for someone to help my daughter for the SAT as she wishes to attend an American University. Is anyone willing to help/tutor?  I did not realize how hard it is to find someone outside of London!!  Any advice would be much appreciated.  Thank you  ???

How much help does she need?  I am a teacher, and I work in Bournemouth, I'd be able to meet her some afternoons if that's not too far for her to go.

There's are some free SAT Practice Test materials online to get a starting baseline.

If she hasn't already tried completing one, I suggest doing so, and then comparing her score against the averages of the Universities she's interested in attending.  (I believe some regions also focus more on a test called the ACT, but I don't know much about it).  Either way, this could help give you both a better idea of how much help is needed.

It looks like Princeton Review and Kaplan also offer online courses, but the tips on Sparknotes appear to be free.

(SparkNotes also managed to help me make it through Senior year English with an A. The Odyssey? Crime&Punishment?!)

When I was applying to unis (11 years ago!  ugh!), I found SATs were used more for schools in the west and ACTs were used more for schools in the east.  Maybe it's changed since then or maybe it depends on the type of school you're applying for, but check with the schools before deciding on the SAT.  :)

I took both tests in the end and scored the same.  Well, they have different ways of scoring, but overall I was in the 85th percentile for both the ACT and SAT.  :)  My high school classes prepped us for the SAT but for the ACT I had to do my own practicing.  :)

Will she be able to take the SAT in the UK or will she need to go to the US for the test?  I know my SAT tests was administered by my high school, but that could have very well changed in the last decade.   ::)

Good luck!  :)
