I have the sweetest OAP neighbours on either side. One couple has written my girls' birthdays on their yearly calendars and always brings a small present and a card for their birthdays as well as Easter eggs, Christmas toys, etc. The ones I share a wall with in our semi-detached house are also rather deaf, so aren't bothered at all when my baby keeps us up crying through the night. I couldn't be luckier!
The neighbour two doors down has a few more troubles. She's actually quite nice and I like her, but I think she's using drugs. She just has that too thin, strung out look that I used to see all the time from new clients at the treatment centre I worked at.
Her relationship with her partner had been rocky, which I wouldn't know except every now and then we'll hear them having a vicious shouting match. A while back, my husband came in and had the "do we need to call the cops" talk as they were yelling so loud and angrily, he had grown concerned for her safety.
She threw him out again that day, and we heard him from a couple houses away threatening to break doors down, which was when DH came in and was looking at calling the cops, but he left at that moment, uttering what sounded like threats on her life if he returned. A few minutes later, DH, who had been working outside, came running in, saying he was back and had just torn down the back fence to her house down. We didn't even hesitate-called the police and told them to come right now!
I had to leave right after that for work and saw that the police were already outside her door, so clearly someone else also called them. I also called Children's Services and made a report. It's always a hard thing to do, but she has a little girl, who shouldn't have to live with that kind of violence.
Her partner was back home the next day, true to form. I hope they are getting help.
