Need NIN to register w/GP?
« on: October 22, 2013, 09:41:05 PM »
Hi All,

I've been here in Edinburgh about 5weeks or so now. I've only just got around to calling the local GP so I can find out about registering. The woman I spoke said they may not be able to register me until I have my Nat'l Insurance Number. I was unaware of any need to have an NIN in order to use the NHS? I do have my lease agreement, Scottish Power bill, Council tax bill, and of course my ILE visa. Shouldn't this be sufficient info for them to register me? I could also bring my work contract if that would make a difference. She made it sound like they could register me, but then I would have to pay, or have private insurance, in order to be seen, prior to my having a NIN.

Does this sound right about needing the NIN? Is there anything I can print off the internet to bring with me to show my right to use the NHS?

If you are in the UK on a settlement visa, or a student visa, you are entitled to use the NHS. You do NOT need a NIN.

You may wish to print the exemptions from NHS charges categories from this page: http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/AboutNHSservices/uk-visitors/Pages/accessing-nhs-services.aspx, and take it along to the GP surgery when you register.

Our surgery required sight of passport, and 2 proofs of current address. In your case I would assume that they would also require sight of your visa.

I just got my NIN, but I'm still unclear about if I can access the NHS for free. I am on a Tier 2 ICT dependent visa, which as I understand it, is no longer a settlement visa. I am working in the UK for a company with offices throughout the UK (as well as the rest of the world). Help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

Yes, you are entitled to NHS care on a Tier 2 ICT dependent visa.   :D
