Hiya. :)  My DH is from Doncaster. I am from Aldan, Pennsylvania (about 10 miles from the Philly airport, and about an hour? from Lancaster.)  We live in Pontefract, about 15 miles north of Doncaster.

Doncaster is a pretty big area, with lots of different types of housing and neighborhoods. It runs the gamut from nearly "big city" living to flat-out country/farmland.  Are you looking to buy or rent? Flat or house? Are your children school-aged?  How far does your DH want to commute to work? Will you drive in the UK? Are you willing to say in what town your husband's job is in? (Might be easier to pinpoint an area, and could be the difference of 25 miles or so.)

She couldn't help thinking that there was a little more to life, somewhere else.
After all it was a great big world, with lots of places to run to.
And if she had to die trying she had one little promise she was gonna keep.

DN12 is actually part of the postal code (zip code). It includes the areas of Conisbrough, Denaby Main, New Edlington, Old Denaby and Old Edlington.

Everyone's experience is different, but I love it here. I have zero regrets about moving. There are little things that annoy me like tiny rooms, no closets and tiny washing machines, but overall I find the living quite easy.  The winters are about as bad as eastern PA winters, and milder than western PA winters on average. The summers here, are to me, glorious. None of that scorching heating and nauseating humidity I experienced back home. I hate heat/humidity, but you may love it. If so, you're not going to like the summers here. I've often worn long sleeves and/or a light jacket in August. :)

In a lot of ways, it is much more expensive to live here. Eating out is, in comparison to where I've lived in the states, exorbitant. On the other hand, I find personal care products (as long as you're not committed to one brand) to be much cheaper on average. You will most likely do a lot more walking here. Depending where you live in Donny, public transport is plentiful (and also relatively clean and nice).

Of course there is the NHS!  I imagine with children that is a BIG bonus!

I don't know anything about the preschools or schools there because DH's son is nearly 21, and he was educated in Pontefract.

In the town center of Doncaster is a huge mall (called the Frenchgate), and there are hundreds of shops surrounding the mall that make up the "town center". There is a major train station there as well.

Cantley, Wheatley Hills, Warmsworth and Sprotborough are decent neighborhoods and on the same side of town where your husband will be working. DH said to avoid Edlington and most parts of Balby. DH is cooking dinner :D, but he said he would give it "a good think" tonight and see if he can come up with more neighborhoods.

If you're interested at all in being close to city amenities, consider moving to the far north of Sheffield- Grenoside, Ecclesfield or Chapeltown. That's about 12 miles away from DN12 but it's part of Sheffield (and nice areas, especially Grenoside) so easy to get into a big city if that's important to you!

Thank you all for the replies!!

Fallgal - I absolutely hate the summers here!! I cannot stand the heat and humidity, the only good thing about summer is that I get an amazing tan just from hanging out laundry (have good tanning genes, LOL!). However, I know with moving there I will be turning a pasty white, I have accepted that :) I do understand the houses are smaller, however I love the fact that the yards are fenced in and you actually have more privacy in your home/back yard then we can get here, unless you have the money to buy lots of acreage here in the states.

Conisbrough seems nice from the internet and so does Sheffield but again I know we wont know til we are over there :)

Also, thank you for the towns to avoid! I had come across another forum where they had mentioned to stay away from balby. But I haven't come across some of those other towns so i will be looking those up as well :)

springhaze- thanks so much for the town names, I havent come across those so I will deff give them a look!!
