EU business travel

Looks as if I'll have at least a few short trips to Europe next year for work, and I'm not sure how well-versed my company is in visa issues, so while I'm thinking about it, I want to be armed with knowledge.

I know it'll depend on the country, but the most crucial trip on the horizon is Barcelona (Sweden and France also possibilities, but not confirmed, so not thinking too hard about that yet). It ::seems:: from the Spanish embassy's website that US passport holders needn't apply in advance for a business visa -- ie, I can do so at the border (bringing the appropriate documentation, eg business cards, conference registration, etc.).

Anyone have any experience with this (Spain and others) and tips for making it go smoothly? I'm happy to sort applying in advance if it sounds as if the border will be a ballache, but I'd rather save my company a few quid if I can.
