Moving to Haywards Heath
« on: October 13, 2004, 12:43:36 AM »
Hello Everyone -

My family and I are moving to Haywards Heath in Sussex on October 27th.  From what I can tell there are not a lot of Americans in this area.  I would love to find a women's club or some sort of organization to help ease the transition.  My husband will be working crazy hours and my children, 5 and 8, will be in school all day.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Also, can I bring over my lamps?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to UKY!  :)

I don't know about Sussex precisely but there are Jr Leagues here and all sorts of volunteering opportunities if you want to get involved in something.  I know a lot of people volunteer at charity shops, and there are lots and lots of those.  I'm sure you'll find something fairly easily!  :)

As for your lamps, I wouldn't recommend bringing anything electrical.  I hear it can be done with converters and transformers and whatnot, but everything I've tried has ended up fried.  The voltage here is just so much higher than in the US.

Good luck and hope you enjoy the site! :)

Ditto to everything wish said... You can bring the lamps and either use a converter which many times does fry things (some people have great luck with these though) or you can pull out all the wires and rewire them.  To be honest you are best just buying new ones here and places like IKEA, Argos, B&Q and others new lamps are pretty affordable.

To be honest I wish I had left more of my things in the USA as most things really are available here.  Really think if what you are bringing justifies the cost of shipping.

Oh and WELCOME to UKY!

Welcome to West Sussex!

I am not much use to you as I am a Brit (married to an American) and we're trying to go back, but I can point you in the direction of some decent, " proper American" food if you feel the need in your first weeks here!  The restaurant is based in Brighton which is definately where you will head to for shopping, the history and the vibe..........you will of course meet other Americans there!

If I can help with anything specific/helpful to West Sussex, feel free to ask-anytime :)

Sorry for the late post welcoming you, but welcome.....you are not too far from us. We live in Horsham West Sussex...just a town or 2 away.  Agree with previous post, you will enjoy Brighton.  I enjoy just walking around.  We moved over from Maryland last August , so we have gotten used to most things, but are still figuring out many things.  My husband has a busy job also and I doing volunteer work.  If you need any advice or questions about what is in the Sussex area you can write me.  Did you say where you are from?

Haywards Heath is a nice town...we go there on occassion for the restaurants.  I think you will enjoy it!

Best wishes

Hi Sherwood,

Even though I am late..... I wanted to just say Welcome to West Sussex to you & your family too, sounds like you have settled in well and I hope you are, and continue to be happy here.

Congrats on your volunteer work :)
