What flag do you associate England with more?
« on: August 06, 2013, 02:26:54 PM »
Hiya all :)

My fiance' and I had a debate recently about what flag is associated more with England. I'm looking into getting a Keep Calm tattoo and Dunno which flag I should go with-is how the debate started.

I always have associated the Union Jack as the flag, honestly I never even knew what St. George's cross was till i saw it on my first visit and asked what was the Red cross flag doing on a cathedral!  ;D Very educated right? lol.

Just curious to know ya'lls thoughts.

It's a touchy subject! Depending on the context, both flags have associations with right wing nationalism and skinheads, and it's only been in the last decade or so that the St George's Cross has been seen as more acceptable in the mainstream. The Union flag represents all the home nations, so if you're wanting something specifically English rather than the whole UK, the St George is more 'English' and also isn't going to p*** off Scottish, Welsh and Irish people if you go around calling it the English flag ;)

I definitely see the "Keep Calm" stuff with the Union Jack all the time.  And I think it would be cooler for a tattoo.   ;D

I'd go with the Union Jack as its more recognisable. You don't want a tattoo with a flag the average person wouldn't know. Saying that one of my young british co-workers didn't even know what the Union Jack was.....LOL
