Shedding?
« on: May 31, 2012, 03:38:36 PM »
So since the warm weather kicked in, madame has been shedding non-stop (to the point I've brushed her three times already today and shes filled her brush three times) Shes not keen on her slicker brush (starts to run away after a few moments and will only sit if I just feed her treats) and was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to deal with it? I saw something called a 'furminator' but at about £25 seems to be a bit steep for just one cat. I was hoping to exhaust other ideas before making such a large purchase. I was also looking into one of those brushes that fit to your palm so it makes the cat think youre stroking it instead of brushing it - an idea if those are any good and if so can anyone recommend one for me??

Im hoping to find something that while heavily shedding we only have to go through this once, maybe twice, instead of three or four times a day.. The less stress she has to go through the better.

I have the opposite problem with my cat - his hair's all falling out, but it's of his own doing. He's got all sorts of weird skin problems, though, which we're trying to sort out.

I do have a furminator for the dog, and it's brilliant (he sheds pretty much year-round). I don't know how well it would work on a cat, though, as it's basically a shedding blade - a bunch of sharp points with spaces in between to catch the hair. The dog's not really keen on being brushed (though he puts up with us because he loves us), I think the cat would really hate us if we tried it on him.

Hope you find something that works!

We use a fine flea comb on our girl, and that gets a lot of fur in one go.  She is very ill, though, and for a long time had only straggly thin fur, so I am actually thrilled to need to brush her again.

I have a furminator for my cat and it's awesome. My old cat had really long hair and it was great. The other cat has shorter hair, but a lot of it. She's not in love with being brushed (but she's not keen on having someone pet her back either), but she'll let me chase her around with it. The amount of hair I get off her is amazing.

The furminator is great...really does the job as long as your pet has fur and not hair as some dog breeds have.
May you dream forever, Forever being your Dreams

Add one more to agreeing the furminator is great.  My cat used to have a shedding and drandruff problem the furm fixed it in about 3 combings over the next week.  Then I'd comb her once a week after that.  She actually loved getting combed by it.

I've got a Labradoodle and she doesn't shed at all, it's a lifesaver!
However she does require expensive hair cuts!
