proof of right to work with spousal visa
« on: August 06, 2013, 06:04:00 AM »
Hi all,
I've been searching online and on this forum for any links to official sites that state that you have a right to work with a spousal visa. (without a separate work visa) We want to relocate to London within the next 6 months, but if I am unable to work we will not be able to move. Can anyone post links to the information I need?
Thanks so much for helping. I am sure I will have many more ??? questions coming, but this is the most worrying to me.

I don't have time to look for a link right now, but I can assure you my visa has WORK PERMITTED right across the front.  You 100% are allowed to work on a spouse visa with no restrictions.

It is pretty much common knowledge....but having looked through the website...it must be buried pretty deep.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

It's one of those odd things about the website... the right to work on a spousal visa isn't really stated anywhere!

Basically, if you are not allowed to work, the visa sticker will say so explicitly. See here for interpretation of what is written on a visa: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/general-info/visa-holders/

Visas that do not allow work will say on them:

'No work or recourse to public funds' (a fiance visa will say this)

An example of a fiance visa (sorry, it's a bit small, but you can probably zoom the page in on it): http://ukfiancevisa.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/aggg2.jpg

Visas that do allow work will not say anything at all about work on them - they just say what you can't do, not what you can do:

'No recourse to public funds' (a spousal visa will say this)

Thanks, all
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has fruitlessly searched for some actual statement.
It isn't common knowledge- I have British friends who insist I will have to apply for a work permit through tier points- as if moving weren't difficult enough already.
Getting ready to put together a timeline for moving, all advice is very much appreciated! This forum is a fantastic resource. Thanks again.

If you have an employer that has any concerns, the UKBA has a hotline set up for them to call to verify your right to work.

This isn't really surprising.  Your British friends may work with people who are in the UK on Tier 2 work visas which are points based rather than with people who are in the UK on   spouse visas.  Spouse visas come with a completely different set of requirements but as soon as you have your visa you're allowed to work.
