The clearance charges are basically for handing the paperwork on the UK side. Someone has to officially 'receive' the goods at the port, sign papers, make sure duty/taxes (if any) are paid, and arrange the road transport. Aside from duty, this MAY be included in your quote, but if by any chance the mattress is held in customs, then there's additional charges which can add up very fast.

A single item is going to be stuffed into a container wherever it fits best for the shipper. You have no control over how it's handled or treated. I would still strongly advise putting the money toward a mattress here - if a major brand, you will find the equivalent - just don't go to Bensons for Beds or Dreams; talk to a small stockist or deal with a large store like John Lewis. If you have a Tempurpedic mattress it might survive. If you have one from The Original Mattress Company ..... feels good for 6 months or so, then it's all downhill from there in my experience.

Look at your brand and contact the manufacturer to see what the equivalent is here.

Hi Vadio

I'm curious to know what company you shipped with and from where. I hope you don't mind my asking but $3500 for 40ft container sounds like a fantastic deal ..I'm currently looking for a shipping co. and prices are steep. This will be the second time i'm shipping to UK. Last time (July 2011) I payed almost $4000 from North Jersey to Nantwich, Cheshire for a 20ft container. I wasn't  pleased with the service or price.  I'm not really looking to send furniture just a lot of boxes (some large) a few large rugs and a twin size captains bed.

Any Suggestions?

Thanks..

we shipped from Richmond VA via Portsmouth to Liverpool. We used M&S Shipping (VA Beach) who arranged the entire container, including road transport and clearing agent on this side. Their price was cheaper than we got from the container line.

This was 2 years ago, so prices will have changed, but with the exchange rate being more favorable, shouldn't be a huge difference. We loaded & unloaded, and DH planned the load. We've done this a couple of times now...but hopefully never again!!

Thanks Vadio,

I'll look into it. Might just be worth it.
