You can get netting type "screens" for doors and windows at Aldi here.  Haven't tried them so don't know how effective they would be, especially if your dog or cat spotted a squirrel or something and made a mad leap.  The other thing to consider is the wide variation in the size and shape of windows in British housing.

I plan in having to make them myself. I will probably make them with a hook and hinges, and put them on the inside. This way I can oPen them and push out the window and easily close them again. This was one thing I've actually put a lot of thought into, and as my parents are all either engineers or builders, I have the know-how, too.

Our cats never go outside either. Of course they would if we did not have screens. You can buy these screens that velcro onto the window frame. They are removable when you move out. There are other companies that sell them ...just remember to use the words "insect screens" if you search :)

My cats were brought over from the States but they were strictly indoor cats there. I had screens on my windows the pull out screens cause my windows were old fashioned. my cats loved it when the windows were open they watched the birds & squirrels an loved having the breeze on them. but here our windows either open inside to the house or slant open into the house we only ever have the windows opened a slant. I don't want to take any chances of the cats getting outdoors. the gap on the window is at the very top an its not overly wide either. so neither of us worry about the cats getting out if we aren't in the room with the open slanted window.
