Carer NI credits and WEP
« on: August 15, 2013, 02:39:23 AM »
The possibility has arisen that I might move back to the UK to look after my mother. I see that under the new pension rules carers can "earn" NI credits even though there  is no income as such. So would a UK state pension due to such NI credits be included in any US Social Security WEP calculations or would they be excluded like voluntary and automatic contributions not associated with non-SS income.

The UK pension is supposed to be going to a flat rate, not based on contributions, in the future. See https://www.gov.uk/changes-state-pension

If you can get any specific information out of SSA on the WEP, I would like to hear about it.

Thanks, my brother and I are making some plans if my mum gets any worse. She's ok for now, but she is getting very forgetful. It's hard to know when to step in as mu Mum is very independent.

I'm sure that your credits would not count for WEP. My reading is that contributions must be earned in a job, so any credits, or voluntary contributions would not count. You could get a pension statement and ask for a breakdown of qualifying years. If you already have 30 years then you're there anyway.

Good luck with mum, it's tough being so far away.

Oh BTW... My reading in to 'carers allowance' shows that you must be in the U.K for the two years prior to applying. I'm in a similar situation and I wasn't eligible.
