OTC ear infection meds?
« on: August 20, 2013, 09:28:43 PM »
Hiya. In the US, whenever I had an earache, I would take 2 extra strength Tylenol, a decongestant, and rub a bit of triple-antibiotic gel slightly inside my ear, tip my head and let it melt in a little. This combo was recommended to me by a pharmacist when I had just started a job and didn't have health insurance yet (and couldn't afford the prescription), and it always worked for me.

Here I am now with no triple antibiotic gel (and it seems they don't sell it here). If I can't get in at the doctor tomorrow, is there an OTC I can buy to relieve the pain?

Thank you for any suggestions!

If you can't get in to see your regular doctor there should be a local walk-in clinic. As you have found anti-biotic gel/creams are not available OTC, probably because there is readily available healthcare.

My GP always recommends rubbing a little olive oil in my ears when I'm having trouble. That's for the ear canal. If there's inner ear infections where the drum may have burst, I don't believe you should use anything.
