It can take up to 6 months, depending on how many applications they have to process.

FWIW, I applied in 2009 and it took about 8 weeks to get a decision back, and I think it was another month before I had my ceremony. Things have changed since then (visa applications are now being processed in England rather than NY, etc) so it may take longer than that now.

If you're on a work visa at the moment, you won't be able to qualify for citizenship using form UKM yet... unless you qualify for UK citizenship by other means, such as through your parents (but in that case you wouldn't have need a work visa in the first place).

If you don't already have a claim to UK citizenship through your family, in order to qualify for citizenship, you need to hold ILR (permanent residence) first... which you can apply for after spending 5 years on a work visa and after passing the Life in the UK test (and meeting the other requirements).

Then after you have been granted ILR, you have to wait a further 12 months before you are allowed to apply for citizenship... so that's 6 years after moving to the UK (5 years on a work visa plus 1 year on ILR).

Ksand, the UKM form is for getting citizenship through a British mother. You're thinking of form AN?
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012
FINALLY A CITIZEN! 29/2/2012

Ah, yes - you're right... sorry, just ignore what I said above - I had just woken up after a night shift when I posted and was obviously not quite with it yet  ::).

Yes, the standard here says six months, but doesn't break it down by citizenship application type:
