Though I did miss what sounds like a riveting barn programme.  ;)

Ohhhh, I would have loved a barn programme!    Is it still on iplayer I wonder?

Things like iplayer, 4Od, etc are so awesome -I am out every night of the week, but I am always wired at 10 pm when I get home and need to decompress my brain.
I think Countryfile is the best show on tv!!
I also enjoy 'QI', 'Grand Designs', 'Russell Howard's Good News', Cooking shows like the Hairy Bikers, Nigel Slater, and Rick Stein, love the documentaries about engineering - trains-transportation-Victorian technology, I loved 'War Time Farm'. I also quite enjoy '24 hours in A&E', 'One Born Every Minute', and even 'Embarrassing Bodies' - because I am quite fascinated with medicine.  For drama, I get sucked into "Call the Midwife" because I think its quite a well done show with good acting and costumes, etc -even if quite schmaltzy (the books are much better and not everything is a happy ending).  There was another good show called "The Village" which I liked, but have no idea if that's coming back.

I will try and find the barn programme. It covered other things like gameskeepers' quarters, which were like little castles; poachers were always lurking about. It was one of those shows that made you think about stuff you never considered - like how the timbers for this particular barn style were hewn from a very particular tree that was grown with a very specific bend. So you had these 'specialist' tree growers - generations of them - who were the 'go to folk' for barn-building materials.

The showcase barn (here in East Anglia) was like a cathedral inside.

The thing with this programme, as is the case with so many BBC documentaries, is that the production values were seemingly way above what might be called for. The presenter was, of course, a very posh professorial type - but the wacky kind who likes to actually try and plow or use an old ax thing to shape a timber. He lost a brogan in a muddy rut once.

But the filming (filmography?) was all about sweeping landscapes and long aerial shots and slow pans down the length of vaulted interiors. Lots of light beams through windows playing on dusty air.  Almost Barry Lyndon era Stanley Kubrickish stuff.

Thanks for all the ideas! Can't wait to find some of these shows and watch them. There were several comments about BBC iplayer, which I have never checked out..will have to get around to seeing what's on there.

If you have Sky theyre sending out free ondemand boxes to subscribers. Lets you access the iPlayer, 4OD, ITV and C5 (as well as sky channels)

http://www.sky.com/products/ways-to-watch/on-demand/

Just plug it into your internet and its ready to go.

We also have the iPlayer and 4OD installed on our PS3. (You should be able to download them to your XBox; not 100% sure about apps for the wii or wii u)

We got ours last week and have use it a few times. I love it compared to the apps for the PS3 - I found those laggy and the quality isnt as good as Skys OnDemand. Also handy if youre recording two things and want to watch a third (well on CatchUp not live)...

I deplore all the American imports.  I suppose reruns are cheaper.  Particularly disappointed in TCM, which was my fave in US.  No commercials, uninterrupted old movies.  What you get here are reruns of "Gunsmoke" and adverts.  >:(

(For some reason I am addicted to 1930's comedies:  Cary Grant, Irene Dunne, Katherine Hepburn -- all that stuff)

Cary Grant is the best. Can a guy look that good in a suit and be that funny?

/He and Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief - can't get any better.

BBC 4 for most French, Nordic shows

Engrenages, The Killing, The Bridge, Wallander, Borgen Arne Dahl

and

Hard (Sky 1 Arts HD, I think?)

Les Revenants, Maison Close (ITV?)

Some Italian shows about as well that are supposed to be excellent.

Les Revenants (The Returned) was on Channel 4.

We really enjoyed Corleone (Italian mafia based on a true story) that was on Sky Arts

anything with David Mitchel.

I agree with a lot of other shows listed. But Definitely this!! Check out Peep Show. It's awesome!

Inbetweeners. Friday night Dinner. I'm currently watching Broadchurch and waiting for Doctor Who to come back on. Orphan Black perhaps? I actually enjoy Top Gear (and I feel like it's ALWAYS on Dave so when there's nothing else to watch, that's what I put on). We do end up watching iPlayer, 40d, and Netflix FAR more than cable however. If you can get 40d online, maybe check out some programs under whichever genre you feel on there? :)

Oh man, I feel like I watch more than my Brit husband and now I'm so overwhelmed with excitement that my mind is just blank haha
My, how time flies....

Sherlock  a modern take on Sherlock Holmes with the excellent Benedict Cumberbatch is due to start soon .
Graham Norton's talkshow on fridays is always funny ,and if you can get home in time ,or have bbc iplayer, checkout the antiques road trip, and put your money where your mouth is .Other programmes i would recommend are
Mock the Week,
Q I,
Have I got News for you ,
By any Means ,and
Atlantis on saturday nights .
Dr Who is due to return soon
its a far better thing i do than i have ever done
