Jury Duty
« on: October 18, 2013, 02:10:47 PM »
Not sure where to post this question, move it if this is the wrong forum.

My family from NY told me I got a jury duty letter.
What do I do if I am unable to attend and that I am not in NY.
=)

This happened to me a few years back in NC. My mother called the board of elections and explained that I no longer lived in the state, and that was that.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

All you need to do is prove that you no longer live in the area, and you're excused (disqualified in most cases in fact).

I had this recently.

Have your family take a picture of the letter and send it to you via email.

Mine had an email address I could contact.  I wrote to it, explained I live in the UK and could provide a letter from my employer and a copy of my UK visa.  They simply wrote back and said I was excused, never wanting any proof.

I received a jury duty notice last summer (for October).  DS sent me the thing to respond to.  I qualified to be excused on two counts: one merely by being resident out of the state/country and the other because of age (ahem!).  I was off the hook almost automatically.

It happened to my wife 2 years ago while were on a long stay in England.  Our son checks our mail while we are away and he contacted them for her telling them she was out of the country and would be happy to serve after we returned.  She's never been rescheduled.
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016
