Lightweight wind/waterproof jackets?
« on: October 29, 2013, 10:28:09 AM »
Hi all,

I've got a couple of wool coats which work well for winter weather here (one hip-length, one knee-length), but they're heavy/bulky to cart around.

Ideally, I'd like to find something hip-to-knee length that's lightweight and would block wind and/or rain so that I can layer a jumper for warmth but not have the bulk/weight.

The stuff I've seen in stores that's actually weather-resistent (e.g. not just cotton) tends to be the Blacks/REI-style outerwear jackets - which are fine, but I'd rather have something I can wear over anything (jeans, dress, etc) and not look odd (in other words, a bit fancier style than your standard shell jacket).

Any suggestions?

When I last shopped in TK Maxx there was a large selection of quilted jackets, both short and longer length.

It's probably not ideal as far as cost goes with shipping and everything, but I got a nice trench from Eddie Bauer that sounds a bit like what you're looking for. I'd had the same trouble finding something that suited my needs. The wind likes to blow the rain sideways in Glasgow sometimes, so I wanted something longer and with a hood, since an umbrella can quickly become useless.

I have this, which has a removable liner that isn't all that thick but is warm. You can also get it without the liner for $50 less. I love it, and it definitely does its job.

They also have this, which has a little bit more of a flared shape to it.

I'm sure you'd rather find something in the UK and I'm sure someone will be along (Mrs. R? She's good at this! :)), but if anything it can be a last resort as they do ship internationally!

Thanks, but I really don't like the look of quilted jackets - not sure why.

Both of those look like exactly what I'm looking for as far as functionality - waterproof with removable lining is ideal. Hopefully I can find something similar here (would be nice to try it on, as I can't decide between those two styles!), but at least it's a good backup plan. Thanks!

i got mine at LL Bean the last time I was home.  Same issues NoT.  Nothing realy suited my needs here and it was all either cheap or, in my opinion, way overpriced.

Have you checked Land's End? It seems like the sort of thing they'd have.

Seasalt?

Craghoppers?

I see a number of parka style longer length waterproof coats out there on websites such as Go Outdoors, Mountain Warehouse, Blacks, etc...so not just the short jacket-y ones...but I guess it depends on how fancy you want your coat to be?

For something fancier, I'd probably just go for a classic trenchcoat, but that might not be 100% waterproof like a technical jacket would be.

Yeah, I think that's my main issue. I like the look of the trench coat, but finding one that's water/wind-proof is a challenge.

Looks nice on the blog, but apparently no longer being sold. :(
