Readings at Civil Ceremony
« on: October 14, 2013, 03:58:26 PM »
It's down to the wire & I need to select a couple of readings for our civil ceremony.  I've got all the usual links to the standard, non-religious pieces....but, I'm just not seeing anything that lights my fire.  Any suggestions?  Thanks much~    [smiley=love.gif]

I'm a big fan of Shakespeare's Sonnet 116, but you've probably got that one.  :)

We had that one at our civil ceremony. And we also had a short selection from Walt Whitman's Song of the Open Road - but it's hard work picking what you want & don't want out of it because it's a very long poem all together, lol.  :)

Also, A Birthday, by Christina Rossetti is lovely. If we were to get married all over again, I'd probably have that one too or instead of one of the others.

Happy choosing!  :)
Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in...

A Birthday, by Christina Rossetti is lovely. [/quote]

THANKS for this.  I think a thread dedicated to poetry might be a nice addition to UKY ;)  That website was a nice resource.  I was drawn to Invitation to Love (Dunbar), Where there is Love (Rice), Somewhere or Other (Rossetti), & To Jane: The Invitation (Shelley).  That's two too many, but at least it's got me a little more inspired than what was on the registrar's approved list (yawn  [smiley=sleeping2.gif]).  There are some nice readings that are in the first person, but I expect I will be a sobbing mess so there's no point in even trying to read something to my fella.  Thanks again for your input!

Ok.... this isn't a serious suggestions (sorry!), but I've been thinking about it recently and secretly hoping someone will use this as a song at a wedding:

Pete's Dragon: Boo Bop BopBop Bop (I Love You, Too) sing along

Ohhhh, I do love me some Pete's Dragon!

I'm keeping my fella in the dark re: the music selection, but you guys won't tell him.

I've hired a string trio & they're playing this while I walk down the isle (it was a favorite of my sweet dad)     Then after we kiss, they're gonna break out this one (it's an inside joke for me & my guy)     And while we're taking some of those painful family pics immediately afterwards, they're gonna play this one (it's a fav of my fella)

I did sort out the readings yesterday, so I think we're set!  Woo hoo.

There's a passage from Captain Correlli's Mandolin that seems to be used as some weddings I've read on blogs. Or Anne Bradstreet does some lovely poetry.. :)

If anyone doesn't want to do it themselves but would like a personalised civil wedding ceremony (including readings) written for them, OneLife is for you! A friend of mine works freelance for them and writes some beautiful stuff! They also do naming ceremonies, funerals, etc.
