Agency work, how many days notice to quit?
« on: November 01, 2013, 10:19:58 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm working for an agency as a temp worker at a local college. I'm just there until they find someone permanent. My DH has just accepted an offer of a dream job quite far away and we need to move there and get everything sorted in a week. How much notice do I need to give my job to let them know I'm quitting?  It's part time temp agency.

Many thanks for any help.

You'll need to take a look at the paperwork you signed and see what the conditions are.

My experience with temp work is that you do not need to give notice.

Awesome about your hubby's new job!!

If it's similar to contracting, standard notice is 1 week (though I've seen as short as 1 day). As KFdancer said, though, temp work usually requires a lot less notice/structure (as it's temporary).

Congrats on DH's new job! Hope the move goes well and you get settled in quickly.

Depends on the contract that you signed. Can't see it being more than a week, some are just a day.
Although I did apply for a 3 month IT contract that stated I couldn't end it but they could do so with a weeks notice, which sounded rather unfair.

Thanks guys. Just read the contract with the agency and it says the agency worker may terminate the assignment at any time without prior notice or liability. Does that mean one day notice? Tia!

I'm sure they would appreciate as much time as you're able to give them, but it does look like you can terminate the contract the day before.

Great thanks. I'm going to try to stay there for a week so that should be plenty.

Things are going well thanks :). I'm stressed out finding a place to live while DH and I stay in a hotel. His job has started this week and he seems happy when he finishes so that makes a pleasant change. An estate agent criticised me for being unemployed today so I feel a bit down at the moment. I shouldn't let it get to me but it has :/. Hopefully we will have a place by the end of next week or so the agency has said.

That's ridiculous! You can't expect to relocate and both have jobs immediately - even ignoring the challenges of sorting that out, you could (quite reasonably) want to take some time to get your bearings, figure out commutes, etc before jumping into job-hunting/acquisition.

I hope you guys find a nice place to live. :)

Estate agents are the worst. Don't let him get you down. Glad your husband likes his job and I'm sure something will pop up for you too once you're settled!  :)

Thanks for the support guys. I'm so sick of going to flat viewings. I was happy with the flat they showed me. Such a shame that they treated me like such crap. They kept asking if I can get a guarantor for me even though DH's salary more than covers the type of rent range we're going for. Then the agent asked what kind of money I'd bring to the table. I wanted to say that before now I was supporting both of us financially and it worked out fine. I didn't have the courage though. I offered to pay several months of rent in advance and that's when all of the guarantor talk was dropped. I am constantly in panic mode and want to take 2 days off from everything when we finally move in somewhere. Then I will job seek again. This place is new and strange to me. I would like to just take a moment to breathe and take it all in before I get the courage to interview.

I second this.

Hope you get some emotional breathing space from these changes to recharge for the next stage.

Hugs.
