How much money can be taken out of UK on a trip?
« on: December 28, 2013, 09:23:03 PM »
Hi,

Got a question,

I need to take money with me out of UK when I travel.
How much am I'm allow to take at one go?
£10,000?

Is this allowance only for one person?
Would it be allow if another family member takes £8,000 and I take £8,000, would there be problems?

Thanks
=)

Er, some more details are required here.  I personally don't see much of a problem with you can taking as much as you want with you on a trip... I think the bigger issue is where you intend to take it.

If it's to the US, I think I remember seeing something on the landing form where you'd be taxed if you bring an amount exceeding $10,000.

Edit:  Just checked the US Customs and Border Patrol website and found Form 105 , which says the following, for the physical transportation of money.  It doesn't seem to apply to online money transfers:
Quote
WHO MUST FILE:

(1) Each person who physically transports, mails, or ships, or causes to be physically transported, mailed, or shipped currency or other monetary instruments in an aggregate amount exceeding $10,000 at one time from the United States to any place outside the United States or into the United States from any place outside the United States, and

(2) Each person who receives in the United States currency or other monetary instruments In an aggregate amount exceeding $10,000 at one time which have been transported, mailed, or shipped to the person from any place outside the United States.

A TRANSFER OF FUNDS THROUGH NORMAL BANKING PROCEDURES, WHICH DOES NOT INVOL VE THE PHYSICAL TRANSPORTATION OF CURRENCY O R MONETARY INSTRUMENTS, IS NOT REQUIRED TO BE REPORTED.
