Creative ideas for checked luggage
« on: December 01, 2011, 07:10:57 PM »
Anyone use boxes or plastic totes to bring as "luggage".  Wondering if anyone found as close as possible to the british airways size of 35.5 x 29.5 x 16 inches?  Most xlarge moving boxes are 24 x24 x16.  Let me know where you got them if you did.  Or any other creative ideas.  Thanks!

We just moved over and used plastic totes as our checked bags- they worked great!!  I didn't go crazy looking for maximum size but got pretty close with ones form Target.  We brought 3 with us, packed them to 49.5 lbs and duct taped them shut.

Don't forget you can use the linear max (H+L+W).  I can't remember the total but you can fins it on the airline websites.

We've also used boxes in the past but I feet the totes worked better overall.

Oh I forgot- you can make your own box too.  We wanted to take something back to the US and we just got a large piece of cardboard and sort of bent and cut it to what we wanted.  It was more rectangle but again fit the linear max so it was checked no problem.  We just went to the skip behind curry's or something like that- i think it was from a huge TV.

We moved in Summer 2010 and checked several plastic Rubbermaid Roughneck containers with our luggage. We made sure they were taped well (duct tape) and labelled before checking them. It worked out well for us (We flew with Delta and they were counted as regular baggage). To be honest, I haven't found sturdy plastic storage containers in shops here that are quite like the ones from the States, so I'm glad I brought them along.

You can use plastic totes as checked bags. I guess these bags will really fit your requirements. Even you can pack luggage up to 49.5lbs and tape them properly to ensure that your items can be moved safely.
