Greetings from a hopefully near-future expat!
« on: November 09, 2013, 09:35:02 PM »
My wife and I are planning to move to London in the near future from the US. We have wanted to move abroad for some time and a potential job opportunity is hopefully going to make it a reality soon. We have a couple of unique aspects that make it both easier and more difficult than for most: In terms of easier, I have a passport from an EU nation due to family nationality (in addition to us both being US citizens), so I'm essentially a local hire, which is certainly a selling point (and opens me up to other opportunities if this one doesn't pan out.) In terms of it being more difficult we have three pets that we would be bringing with us (a dog and two cats) which we realize is crazy, but it is what it is. They're coming with us.

We're hoping this is a long-term move and would love to fully embrace the UK and its proximity to the rest of Europe as a place to really settle down.

We recently visited and found that we were fully on board with this move. We feel like Southwark is probably our best fit for access to culture, work, and dog-friendly activities. I've read the "things you should know before moving" post and feel very confident in our preparedness for the transition: We are wildly open-minded to other cultures, already enjoy the British sense of humor immensely, have family support where it counts (and family disengagement where it doesn't) plus some local London friends/acquaintances already. And, of course, we have each other, so regardless we would be on this adventure together.

Anyway, I'll continue to read through this site and others as we hopefully progress towards the actual move… Looking forward to moving on to the actual planning stage soon!

Happy Holidays!

I think we're very close to acting on everything i said above. The career move that would need to be in place looks to be happening early in 2014. SO now we have to figure out how to:
- Move the pets
- Pack up the stuff we want to take
- Sell/give away/trash the rest
- Sell the house
- Sell the cars
- ETC!!

It's crazy! But it's helpful to learn from everyone else who's done it before us. Luckily for us I don't think we're going to take much in the general scheme of things (probably no furniture or big items) so that should help but still, it's a lot to manage. I'll probably go ahead and start to work while my SO stays behind and handles the rest of the move. Not sure if we'll have any relocation assistance but we'll manage.

Anyway, pretty excited!!

All the best! Just make sure you have your SO's visa sorted out before you go!

We're going to get that ball rolling as soon as we know what the time frame is. I suggested that we get on the horn with the embassy well in advance and have that all ready to go but she wanted to wait. Hopefully that won't be a problem. She won't be working right off the bat anyway since her industry is weird and not something that you can really set up from afar. But we'll make sure to do as much legwork as possible!

You'll need an EEA family permit.  You won't get any help from the embassy.

Thanks! I was using "embassy" euphemistically but that link is great. We will definitely dot all the I's and cross all the T's!

Just a follow up… Got the job offer! Now we just need to actually MOVE! We'll be peppering various forums with questions about family permit, pet relocation, real estate, bank accounts, etc… Very exciting! I should be there in Q1 2014!

Well this is it! Today's my last day at my current job. Then I have a couple of days to tie up loose ends and I fly on Wed night! I have an appointment with a relocation specialist Friday to look at flats (mostly Islington and Clapham) and my wife and pets join me in March. So excited!

I hope your move is going well! I will probably have to ask your advice on pet related matters in the future, I refuse to move without my dog as well.
