spousal visa supported documents
« on: January 21, 2014, 11:35:25 PM »
Hi everyone!

I've become really confused with the supported documents required. I've read in various places that phone cards, phone bills, and emails are required as evidence, however, my partner and I only use Skype for communication. Is it sufficient enough just to have evidence from Skype to prove our relationship? I can't understand how phone cards and phone bills can prove communication between a couple, as they could have contacted anyone with the phone card.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yes, Skype is fine - it's what many people here use as evidence for their visa.

You just need to take a screenshot or two of your call logs (just dates and times of calls over the period of your relationship) and print them out.

Essentially you just need to include evidence to show that you regularly communicate with each other. It doesn't matter how you communicate, just that you can show evidence of it.

So, you just use the evidence that applies to you.

It could be any of the following:

- boarding passes from trips to see each other
- letters or cards you've sent each other
- screenshots of your e-mail inbox showing a list of e-mails you've sent each other
- Skype call logs
- physical phone bills from a landline or a mobile phone

Thanks ksand24! I'm hoping that travel tickets and Skype would be enough. I have another question regarding the sponsors passport. Would it be acceptable to get a passport copy certified by a solicitor? if, yes, would I need to get each page of the passport copied and certified?

Thanks again  :)

Yes, Certified copy of your spouse's passport is acceptable. No, you only need certified copy of the details page.

Save your money.  You only need a regular photocopy of the sponsor's bio page.

See the attached UKBA guidance:

Thanks everyone! Does anyone know how many text based conversations and calls from skype I should document for each month and how many months should I cover as my relationship goes back a few years now.

Ideally they should cover the entire relationship, so you just need to send a suitable number covering the whole time, but not so that you have pages and pages of logs.

If possible, you should not include any actual text conversations - all that is needed is the time and date that you communicated, to show that you talk on a regular basis.

So, if you can filter the call log (selecting the dates you want to), you could include a list of maybe 2 or 3 calls per month, for each year of the relationship.

If you can't filter the calls (can't select the ones you want) and can only print out a list of each call made, you could perhaps include one screenshot of calls per 2-3 months (i.e. a screenshot from January, one from April, one from July and one from October of each year... something like that).

Did you make the call log yourself ksand24 when you applied or did you use software?

How would I go about doing that for skype conversations as it only shows the time for each message in the conversation in windows. Would i need a conversation log with screenshots of the conversations like the call logs?

I haven't ever applied for a UK visa, so it's not something I've done myself.

I don't know, because I've never tried to create a log of Skype conversations or calls (I barely ever use Skype myself), which is why I made a couple of different suggestions, as I'm not sure what options you have in Skype to create a call/conversation log.

The main thing is that you should not be including actual conversation text or email content in your evidence. UKBA don't need to see or read your personal conversations, they just need evidence that you have been conversing (dates and times).

So, it's up to you to figure out the best way to submit your evidence.

I just had a question about the Skype logs, I have them kept in my iPad. I have Skype logs organised for each month now that we've been apart. Every time I take a screen shot of our logs it doesn't give the exact date it just says for example; yesterday or the day of the week like Monday or Friday, the call time and duration. I was planning on sectioning logs for every month, would that be alright? Or does it have to have the actual date?

You need to show them for the duration of your relationship, so they will need dates on them - otherwise how will you prove to UKBA that all the calls didn't just happen in the space of a few weeks rather than a few months?

Can't you just set it to show 'All Calls'? I can do that on Skype on my laptop - I just click on the Contact, click on History, and then select 'All' and it shows all the calls I've made to that person since I got my laptop (Nov 2012 to Feb 2014) with call duration, day, month, year and time of call.

If you can get that up, then you can take screenshot of certain collections of calls, to show regular contact over the months.

You only want to show a handful of calls per month - maybe 1 or 2 per week - so you ideally want to be able to list all of the calls on one screen, so you can select the ones you need or take one screenshot for every few weeks.

Yes I can get the calls if I go all the way back to my Skype history. So 1 or 2 screenshots per week is ok? Cause I get worried when we don't talk for a day I thought we had to show everyday that we talk since it's hard because of the time difference and cause he's doing overtime to sponsor my visa there's at least one day we don't talk. Thank you

1 or 2 screenshots per week is way too much - you do not need to show that you talk every day, you just need to show regular contact while apart... i.e. you are taking at regular intervals over a period of a few months, so just a couple of screenshots per month showing that you are still in contact is all you need.

Ideally, you want to show just a selection of calls, covering several weeks or months, on one screenshot - maybe 1 call per week in a list, something like this:
1/1/14 - Call duration 1 hour
8/1/14 - Call duration 2 hours
15/1/14 - Call duration 30 min
22/1/14 - Call duration 1.5 hours
etc.

But, if you can't filter the calls to just select a few, then instead you can take a screenshot at different intervals, maybe 2 screenshots per month, and if you can fit 2 or 3 screenshots onto one page for printing, that would be even better.

You don't really want to send more than maybe 4 or 5 sheets of paper in total with your screenshots on them, covering the whole time you've been apart.
