Tax on Gifts?
« on: April 06, 2014, 07:45:39 PM »
Hi Folks

My wife is a US Expat and we're in the process of purchasing a property over in the UK. Her father is wanting to provide a sum of money (arround 15k USD) and we're wondering what needs to be done in way of taxes on both sides of the pond.

The HMRC website doesnt seem to list anything that applies, and I've not even started with the IRS. Taxes seem to just be confusing for the sake of confusion!

Any help on this would be appreciated!

The IRS allows an individual US taxpayer to receivemake gifts up to $14,000 per donorrecipient per year, tax free. Gift tax is payable on gifts over $14k.

A small but important typo has crept in - I think politicfool probably meant to type:
The IRS allows an individual US taxpayer to make receive gifts up to $14,000 per donor per year, tax free. Gift tax is payable on gifts over $14k.
