UK Licence process...advice?
« on: April 17, 2014, 09:44:08 AM »
I've just gotten my provisional licence and booked my theory test for 24 May (as it was the first Saturday available at a reasonable testing center for us). I thought I remembered someone on here mentioning an iphone/ipad app to prepare for the theory test that was really useful but I can't find that. Any recommendations?

Also, can anyone confirm that when I go to take my theory test my provisional (card and paper) is enough and I won't need my passport? (Because I need to send my passport and residence permit off to get a new residence permit with the name change)

If you have any other handy tips or things to remember when learning to drive in the UK let me know...I could use all the help I can get!

(PS for the record, if anyone is wanting to get their provisional licence but is afraid of sending documents to be kept the 5 weeks they say...it seems to be a really good time. I applied online 31/3, got the extra form to send with photo and residence permit 5/4, sent them off 8/4 and got my license yesterday - 16/4. So just over a 2 week turn around from online app and only about a week without my documents! Of course your experience may vary.)

The name of the app is "Driving Theory Test" by Deep River Development for the iPhone/iPad and it is on this thread http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=82248.0  I used a google app (I don't have an iPhone) and I got the dvd's for the theory test and the hazard perception, they really helped a lot!!
The only advice I can give is what helped me pass the theory test, take every "mock" theory test/hazard perception test that are on the DVD's & app's and that you can find on google and then take them all again and again until you feel comfortable in your knowledge  ;D
I was ok with the theory test part, I knew I could study for that, the hazard perception takes a while to get the hang of on how to respond correctly! At least it did for me  :P

I took the the test in March, but I cannot for the life of me remember if they looked at or even asked for my passport? You can call DVLA and ask if they need it though to be certain.
Good luck :)

Thanks! I was looking in the travel and transport section and didn't try expat life so that must be how I missed it!

I downloaded a few different free ones over the weekend to try out that that was actually one I liked anyway and paid the 99p for! So far I'm mostly struggling with stopping distances and first aid/accident response...so I'm feeling pretty confident I'll be fine by late May :)

I will definitely call DVLA before I send off the passport just in case...thanks for the tip :)
