Soooo, is this... normal?
« on: July 09, 2019, 10:45:07 AM »
Ok, Tesco just dropped off my order. I had ordered 5 "new season" potatoes. The photo is what I got. It is a bit...underwhelming.  I have no sense of what should have arrived, other than it would appear that these are really very small for the money, and not in the greatest shape.

Or do they always look like this? (Note to self- do not ever order these again.)

It depends how you paid for them.. if it was per each, then it's bad!  ;D

Just noticed that you paid by weight. That's expensive for such a small amount and honestly doesn't look like it even makes the weight it's supposed to be.  I just googled and they are £1 for 750g in Sainsburys and £1.20 for 1kg of salad potatoes in Tesco.

You have to be careful buying loose produce though as it very often is more expensive than the pre-packaged, unfortunately.

New potatoes are small though, that's the point. They look like they will wash up fine, although you might go hungry! What are you going to be using them for?  :)

Planned to boil, then salt and butter them. Obviously not going to break the diet on these babies!

A little fresh mint added to the boiling water is lovely with new potatoes.  :)

Looks like they just grabbed whatever to meet the weight. Probably some dirt in there to add up the weight.

Yeah, they were supposed to be 16pence each.  https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/253555232

Unfortunately, buying a whole kilo of potatoes in a plastic bag means that, not only are they in a plastic bag, but some will go bad. We don't eat much in the way of potatoes. Just now and then.  I probably should have gotten their bakers (which I don't consider a baker, but they're ok) instead. https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/253558183

I empty potatoes out of their plastic bags into a paper one as soon as I get them home. Keep them in a cool, dark place and they last for ages.  :)

We must just be the lucky kitchen then. I have a couple of purpose-made bags, one for onions and one for potatoes. Since we eat potatoes about once a month, they're almost always sprouted if they're in the bag, by the time I go looking for one. We go through a lot more onions, so those never really go bad. Except for the string of french onions we got at Roots & Fruits. Those things didn't make it three weeks before going off. ???

Just call Tesco.  They will issue an immediate refund.

I'm not calling 'em for  69pence.

Boiled them today - they were quite nice, actually. Not as sweet as a lot of the potatoes here (and that is a plus - to me, a potato that has a sweet flavor is one that's been stored too long). Served boiled with butter and salt, as a side dish to turkey breast and a nice cress and beet salad.

I have to say, I am impressed with Waitrose's hand-carved turkey breast. I normally don't buy meat there, but was in the other day to get some more curry mix, and wandered around a bit. They had it pre-packaged over in the deli section and on a really large reduction, so I bought it. It is lovely. I am hoping it's available before Thanksgiving, as I'll go in and buy a bunch of it and skip the having to cook a whole turkey just to get the white meat!

Tesco had an offer on potatoes at Christmas 2017... 29p for a 2.5kg bag.  I bought 10 bags the first week, and when the offer was still going on, I bought another 5 bags the next week.  My husband brought home a couple of hessian (burlap!) bags for me to put them in, and we kept most of them in the garden shed, and every few days, my husband would bring some potatoes into the house for us to eat that week.

Under normal circumstances, I have to buy a 2.5kg bags of potatoes every week to keep up with what we eat (seriously... we eat a LOT of potatoes).  I still take them out of the plastic bags and put them in hessian, and I do what I can to prevent light reaching the potatoes before we can get to them.

The Christmas offer ones lasted for about 3 months, I think.  We were sad when I had to remember to buy potatoes again.
