DW is doing her US tax return, do you mail them to an address in UK (e.g. embassy) or do you mail to the US?

I sent mine (and state tax) by International Tracked, in order to track it online.  In the US I always sent it Certified and you got a stamped card back when it had been delivered.  The Post Office guy here said they couldn't do that as it was a P.O. Box and there wouldn't be somebody inside the box to sign for it  ::)

I tend to send all of my communication tracked with a receipt. It's only £5 or so, and in my opinion is worth the cost as evidence, in case it gets lost and they decide you haven't filed!

Once you have mailed in your taxes you can periodically look on the IRS website to see if they have received it and are processing it, under "Where's my refund?"

It still lets you know the status of the tax return.  I usually e-file but had to paper file a few years ago, and it was useful to know that the return had been received and was being processed.

If you owe taxes then you can check your bank account to see if the money has gone out, although when we lived in Louisiana many years ago I didn't notice that the check hadn't been cashed for my State taxes owed until after April 15th, and when I called they said they hadn't received the return.  They were very good about it, said it was probably their fault, and asked me to re-file and charged no penalty.  Ever since then I have been nervous about paper returns.

For FEDEX, DHL, and UPS only:

Internal Revenue Service
3651 South Interregional Hwy 35
Austin, Texas
78741
U.S.A.
Attn: Receipt and Processing
Contact Telephone: (512) 460-7944

Price for FEDEX last year was £38.38 for a 50 page return. Price may be more expensive for a 300 page return (?).

A return mailed in the AM of one day will reach the IRS in Austin by 3:00 PM the following day (UK time). It will be signed for, and a digital copy of the signature may be found on the FEDEX site.

Peace of mind comes at a price.
