UK-Yankee Forum Dead??

I come on this site periodically, about once or twice every 2 weeks, and I have noticed that between my visits not much really changes on here!! No new subjects are started in any of the forums, in particular, the News Forum!! With all that is happening in the world now(Nelson Mandela's death being a prime example), there is no new subject threads that appear in the News Forums in regards any major news events!! And the same goes for virtually all the other Forums I visit!! Even in the Healthcare and Insurance Forum there's no new threads initiating discussions about Obamacare despite it being major news items on CNN, Fox News, CNBC and Bloomberg!!

This leads me to believe that this site is dying a very slow and painful death and its days are very much numbered!!

Lets see if we can resurrect this place back to life!!!

You tend to always look for the same sort of posts. Just because no one is posting about current events doesn't mean a site is dead. It just means people aren't interested in discussing those topics on here. You're welcome to post about whatever you want, but I don't see how you not finding topics you want means the site is dead.  In fact, I actually think you're trolling with your posts like this one.

I don't really understand why you come to this site since you seem to complain about it quite a bit? Aside from trolling, most likely. This isn't the first time you've complained about news discussion.

It's not a news site.

If you want to talk about news every 2 weeks, I would find another forum for that.

I dont come on here to complain and to troll. I come on here to basically be around Americans, who I prefer to mix with rather than my own race. I even went as far as to declare that this site was my second "home"(apart from Facebook, of course!!! ). But every time I come on here theres no real change of any sort, which made me wonder whether this site was slowly dying a natural death!!

I used to go on www.digitalspy.co.uk until I got permanently banned for my almost fundamental anti-British views and beliefs!! So this site was a very welcome relief to me as a place for open and enlightening conversations and discussions!!

I know we've addressed your concerns before, but I'll kind of reiterate it.

I moved to the UK to experience life outside of the US.  I busted my tail getting a degree that would set me up to live outside the US and experience other cultures and countries.

One of my favourite things about living in the UK is not being bombarded by US politics anymore.  Last year's presidential election was AMAZING as I didn't have to watch all of those horrible ad campaign commercials during my favourite programs.

Most of us use this website as a way of learning from other Americans how to go about living in the UK, whether its visa status, naturalization, what shops are carrying American foods at the moment, a bargain airfare to the US for the holidays, the difference in medical care, etc.

You will find that our news section is mostly stuff that affects those of us who don't live in the US anymore (how parliament is proposing making immigrants pay for NHS, changes to the financial requirements for visa sponsorships, etc.).

Of course you are welcome to post anything you like about stories that are interesting you and some people will share in the enjoyment of the banter.  I just think the majority of us are very happy to have emigrated away from the US media.

Digitalspy is a pretty open-minded site in my experience! The sort of behaviour that could get you banned there could most likely get you banned from any forum ... so be careful! We may have enlightening discussions, but insulting British people (of whom there are quite a number here) won't make you many friends.

If you're interesting in talking about news issues, why don't you start a thread? Don't just wait for other people to do it - start one and if people want to join you in talking about Nelson Mandela and Obamacare, they will. 

Yep, I think people just go to other sites for their news chat nowadays.

And much of the socialising that used to occur on UKY has moved onto newer platforms such as Facebook - there are probably a bajillion different 'Americans in the UK' groups on there now.

A lot of people still come here for advice on Visas & Citizenship though.

Being American isn't a "race" so I'm not sure what type of people you are looking to converse with.  The majority of the people on here are Americans who moved to the UK - for school, for love and for work. So they want to be here. They're not anti-British. A lot have British spouses, and British children. I don't think anti-British views and beliefs will get you very far here.

I think a lot come on here mainly for visa and immigration-related topics. Like others, I get my news elsewhere, and there is no shortage of articles and forums regarding Mandela's death and Obamacare. It's not the focus of this forum.

I don't know how you can say that no new topics are started in any of the forums in a two-week span. There are always lots of new topics in the Visa section, and several others.

Like others said, start your own threads and if others want to discuss, they will. I don't go on the dog forum I frequent to discuss the Obama's dog, or countries that use dogs for food. It may pertain overall to dogs in general, but it's not the focus of that forum.

AmericanG, darn it I have posted some news stories, some of which I thought were quite inciteful.

I'm interested in keeping up with the immigration and visa section of the site, and also answer questions on living in the UK where I think I can help.

Just because I, along with other UK Yankee members, don't use this site to discuss news stories doesn't mean the site is dying.

I only care about food. 

I think you'll find more receptive audiences on American news sites.  As a Brit who claims to be anti-British, I don't quite understand why you'd be on a site for expats who've chosen to expatriate.  If you despise your country of birth so much, there are plenty of rah-rah American sites to whet your appetite.  Try foxnews.com for starters.  Also:

It's always nice to stop in and find UK Yankee still here. My wife and I first arrived on the shores of Visas & Citizenship, like many. Driving and tax threads help to keep us coming back. It was satisfying to post my lamb series to an appreciative audience last year. (Kept meaning to do another this season, but it always slid down my to do list.) I'm also with KFdancer on this:
